Newsweek has an interesting mini-feature questioning the efficacy of shock ad tactics. AdRant founder Steve Hall told Newsweek these ads are “like a sledgehammer to the face.”

It all depends on how the ’shock ad’ is executed and who you’re asking. Some people have weak stomachs or are extremely empathic and shock ads are just plain cruel to them, while others are cynics/realists or just plain objective and see the truth behind the gore; but those are just two extremes. I’m right in the middle. Sometimes a shock ad is what you need to let people know just how dangerous something is because they’d never learn their lesson unless is happened to them, and other times it’s overkill.
